I’m sure we’ve all experienced bullying at least once in our lifetime, and it’s anything but a pleasant experience. Bullying at school today doesn’t look the same as it did fifty years ago, and I would dare to say that it’s significantly worse.
Kids today have almost unlimited access to technology and social media, which also means that they have unlimited opportunities to bully others or be bullied themselves. As a result, today’s youth has the potential to experience bullying at school, and also continue to be harassed during home time as well. The bullying that they’re experiencing many times comes in the form of texts, posts, and photos, as well as face-to-face verbal and physical harassment. This can create stress and pain for the one being bullied whether they’re at school or not.
Bullying at School and Suicide Can Be Connected
The rate of teen suicide is continually rising, with the age of kids committing suicide becoming younger and younger. Bullying at school can be easily overlooked. Bullying is no longer just “something that happens”, but has evolved into a bigger threat to the mental health of our students.
What Can We Do About Bullying at School?
While putting an end to bullying at school may not be as simple as a conversation or just one school assembly, doing those things can be a great start to taking the steps needed to empower kids to put a stop to it. The power ultimately lies in the hands of those doing and witnessing the bullying, so switching the mindset of these kids is vital to making real change and progress against bullying. As educators, you care about your students and you want to make a change – that’s where we come in.
